Reflecting the Real
“Reflecting the Real,” which opens Saturday October 3rd, 2015, features the work of 19 artists (all connected to the Grand Central Atelier) working in a range of classical subjects from figurative, landscape to still-life imagery, and will showcase the reemergence of traditional technique in contemporary art. Once an immense and admired movement in the art world, realism was eventually eclipsed by abstraction and surrealism and fell out of favor in the public eye in the mid-1900s. In recent times, artists have been heralded for their ideas and conceptualization but it appears the art world has found a renewed appreciation for technical ability and mastery.

The show catalog is prefaced with a few words by Gabriel Weisberg, professor at the University of Minnesota and one of the most respected art historians specializing in Nineteenth-Century Realist and Naturalist Art. Weisberg feels that “with a training to paint what is visible, these avid admirers of painters from the past have made contemporary realism a powerful force. Finding many ways to paint reality has given these artists an opportunity to reactivate tradition with new life, thereby making their works fervent examples of the ways in which the past can be reflexive and motivating for a new era.”

While “Reflecting the Real” will literally be an exhibition of works reflecting the world as it appears, each artist goes through their own creative process, finds their own inspiration and conveys their own message with their artwork.

Synesthesia
This spring, Rehs Contemporary sets the stage for a sensory overload in New York City. Opening April 9 2016, ‘Synesthesia’ will unveil a body of work from The Ani Art Academies which explores the complex phenomena of joined perception. As you may know, the term synesthesia relates to the idea that a stimulation of one sense, such as seeing an image, causes an additional sensory reaction in another sense, such as hearing a sound. While this sensation is incredibly rare, the talents of the Ani Art Academies will convert you into a synesthete! Stop by and hear the works of art. Feel the colors. Taste the sounds.

Heroes, Villains, Myths, Legends

WHEN

With mainstream media fixated on science fiction -- heroes, villains, myths and legends have not only become part of our daily lives, but in some cases, an obsession.  You see the effects every day, from San Francisco turning into Gotham City for a day just to make a little boy’s dream come true, to the young ladies who dream and plan their sweet 16s and weddings that are fit for a princess and the wealthy collectors paying tens of thousands of dollars for collectible comics and action figures.  In addition, according to various reports, the past five year's top worldwide box office hits were: 2013 - Iron Man 3 which made over $1.2 billion, 2012 - Marvel’s The Avengers making over $1.5 billion, 2011 – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 bringing in over $1.3 billion, 2010 - Toy Story 3 making over $1 billion and 2009 - Avatar which made just over $2.7 billion …these movies are all about heroes, villains, myths and legends.  It is a theme everyone can relate to, and with such a broad subject matter given to the talent found at the Ani Art Academies ... well, our show – Heroes, Villains, Myths, Legends - is going to be epic.

Last year’s exhibition – The BIG Gamble – posed the following question: Does contemporary art need to shock the viewer to be good?  I think we proved it does not...well, kind of.    The overall reception to our exhibition was incredible and the opening saw more than 700 people in attendance with plenty of sales.

We have always viewed “shock-value” in terms of what some artists/people claim are works of art and the astronomical prices certain contemporary pieces can bring.  Over the past year, at auction, we have seen artists take everyday items, declare them works of art and sell them for large sums of money.  In addition, works by Basquiat reached nearly $50 million, Warhol’s work sold for $40 million+ and a Lichtenstein climbed over the $56 million mark – to many, this was shocking.  We believe the Ani Art Academy artists truly hold their own “shock-value.”

Realism has been overpowered by pop and abstract art for some time and we’re at a point where many are left thinking, “Where is the talent?” How many times do we have to walk out of a contemporary art exhibit and say to ourselves, “Well… a 5 year old could have done that!”  It is time that Realism steps out of the shadows of the art world and takes its place in the spotlight, where truly talented and devoted artists are appreciated for their refined skill and dedication.  The rigorous training at the Ani Art Academies develops artists who create “shock-value,” but in a very different way than most contemporary artists do. With shockingly precise and realistic charcoals and oil paintings, these young artists will make you rethink your views on the art world of today as they present works inspired by characters and stories they love. Take a journey with the Ani instructors, apprentices, students and alumni into another world, a world of Heroes, Villains, Myths & Legends.

This exhibit is the second significant concentration of works in New York City from The Ani Art Academies’ instructors, current apprentices, alumni and associates.  On view will be a variety of works celebrating The Lone Ranger, Poseidon, Atlas, Aphrodite, Mata Hari, Spider-man, Joker, Tron and many others; this will be an amazing exhibition and one we know you will enjoy.

As we have stated before, our ultimate goal with these exhibitions is to celebrate the good, the talented, and the skilled artists who continue a great tradition, centuries old, of Academic training.

ARC Select 2016
Rehs Contemporary is proud to work side by side with the Art Renewal Center as we present ARC Select; a group exhibition featuring the works of 6 hand-picked artists from ARC's annual Salon. Our inaugural ARC Select show features a diverse roster of contemporary realist artists who demonstrate superior technical skills, utilizing techniques reminiscent of 19th Century masters while remaining relevant to contemporary aesthetics. While each artist has their own style, theme and subject, the works showcase their immense talent and the dedication each has to their craft.

The featured artists include the world renowned Joseph McGurl, known for his masterful plein-air landscapes which exemplify the use of light, while incorporating tireless attention to detail. Kari Tirrell, a self-taught artist known for her quirky still lives and mesmerizing toy jumbles. Richard Hall, a brilliant visual story-teller whose work incorporates twists of humor and whimsy. The Haitian artist Philippe Attie's meticulously crafted figure paintings juxtaposed against a playful abstraction. Walter Rane's investigations of the human form and the relationship with their environment and atmosphere; evoking ephemeral moments of spiritual interactions captured on canvas. Along with Duffy Sheridan, an artist whose tireless exploration has empowered him to reveal and convey the true subtleties of human expression.

The ARC Select Opening Event is scheduled for October 22nd and all of the works will remain on display through November 18th at Rehs Contemporary Galleries located at 5 East 57th Street, New York, NY 10022. We welcome artists, collectors and enthusiasts alike to join us as we celebrate today's finest realist artists.

Rehs Contemporary Galleries, Inc. began as a new venture for Rehs Galleries in 1987. With the gallery’s foundation in classical 19th Century academic art, Rehs CGI provides a platform for artists who create original works using traditional techniques; works that demonstrate an artist’s superior technical skills and classical training. We strive to maintain the integrity and quality of art that Rehs Galleries, Inc. is known for and has always been proud to sell.

The Art Renewal Center® was founded in 1999 for the advancement of traditional and contemporary representational art. As one of the Internet's leading art resources, the ARC has become a central hub for the promotion of Contemporary Realism (Post-Contemporary Art) and the resurgence of skill-based training in the visual arts. In addition to our daily blogs and weekly newsletter, the International ARC Salon Competition, dedicated to realist artists, is the largest and most prestigious in the USA and perhaps the world. Other features include the ARC's annual scholarship competition that distributes $30,000 each year to students who attend ARC Approved™ schools, dozens of articles, essays and entire books that can be read online, both historical and contemporary. The ARC museum contains images by over 7,000 of the greatest artists in history with over 80,000 images, many at high-resolution, including a growing number of 21st century artists in our Living Master and Artist's Gallery.

Skin & Tonic
Opening Thursday, May 4th, Rehs Contemporary will debut David Palumbo and Todd M. Casey’s Skin and Tonic at their 57th Street gallery. With more than 100 works between the two, the walls are expected to be jam packed, celebrating figurative and still life work - as the art world has done for centuries.

With a growing presence of Realism in the Contemporary art world, it is no surprise to see a contemporary twist on these classic motifs. As Art Historian Janet Whitmore notes in the exhibition catalog, “both Palumbo and Casey participate in the academic tradition of classical realism, but it is the context of twenty-first century life that provides the structure for their work.”

David’s paintings, on the surface appear erotic, but is far deeper and more sensual. The female figures arouse a sense of intimacy – well-crafted and composed to give you a window into a very private moment in time. It is that intimacy, and sense of vulnerability, that instantaneously draws you in. Palumbo goes on to set the tone through hands and facial expressions while building the atmosphere using heavy brushstrokes of deep or vibrant hues. The resultant compositions are beautiful, raw and engaging.

Todd takes on a very different subject through his still life work. Todd’s exploration encompasses more than you might think at first glance… he delves into the celebration and struggle of life. While his compositions of bright alcoholic drinks and objects before stark backgrounds are beautiful in and of themselves, what brings Todd’s work to another level is the emotion that this imagery can evoke - we celebrate with alcohol, we commiserate with alcohol, and we escape with alcohol. Todd too draws on this feeling of intimacy, allowing the viewer to connect the work with their own experiences - leaving the meaning a bit open ended as it parts ways with the easel but wholly complete when the right viewer steps in front of the canvas.

Both artists are truly dependent on the viewer. They rely on the observer’s personal experience to fully complete the narrative – and that is part of what makes their works so intriguing. It is that ability for the artist to relate and connect; to make you feel.
